The 3 day cardiac diet exposed!

The 3 day cardiac diet is not a healthy diet. In fact the act of dieting should be deleted from everyone’s vocabulary. Allegedly started from the Birmingham cardiac floor the 3 day cardiac diet claims to lose weight fast and safely. Losing 10 pounds so rapidly means you are actually losing water weight and not the targeted fat content. To start the process of fat breakdown the body would take 3 days to actually start to lose fat. Weight fluctuates all day everyday. We gain weight throughout the day and we would weigh heavier by the end of the day than in the morning. To actually gauge weight loss properly you should weigh yourself in the morning and on the same day once a week.

Modified Atkins diet

The Atkins diet plan has been around for more than 10 years and since, people have building on the diet and modifying it to suit their own needs. The main staple of the Atkins diet is to eat fewer carbohydrates. Carbohydrates are the main energy source of the body and the complex carbohydrates fuel all functions of the body. Atkins states in order to lose weight you need to reduce the amount of carbohydrates to around 40 grams per day. Eating less than 60 grams of carbohydrates a day starts a process of ketosis, fat breakdown. The 3 day cardiac diet is an Atkins copy cat. The 3 day cardiac diet aims to modify the diet to a point of almost eliminating carbohydrates and stating exactly what to eat. The rigid diet of the 3 day cardiac diet leaves it unattainable for the long run and removes everyone’s free will, in doing so we create temptations in the form of cravings. When the diet is over people tend to indulge in the cravings thus creating a vicious cycle of bingeing and modified purging. Sound familiar? All we have done is created a new medical problem of “modified Bulimia”. Everybody is different and results will vary.


Ketosis

When carbohydrates are not available; the body uses fatty acids as an energy source. Our bodies do what comes naturally adapting to our changing environment. In order to survive, our bodies need to use different fuels. Ketosis is the result of the lack of carbohydrates in the diet. Ketosis is a result of a chemical breakdown called Lipolysis. The process occurs in the liver and takes 3 days for the process to actually start. The process of breakdown ends in ketones in the blood. Ketone bodies are acidic and an over abundance of ketones makes our blood acidic. The acid in our blood affects all our body systems and is especially harsh on the brain since the brain does not burn ketones it uses sugars. The extra work that is place on the liver causes strain and possibly liver damage. The body requires sugars during and the body suffers in performance if it doesn’t get what it needs. The sugars come from the carbohydrates we eat. This back up process for energy is only meant for “in case of emergencies”.

Affect on the body

It has been shown that sustained ketosis, like the 3 day cardiac diet, is harmful to the body if not life threatening. Doctors are concerned from the prolonged state of ketogenesis has on the body and from living in an acidic environment. Prolonged acidosis causes body systems to fail symptoms that include headaches, sleepiness, confusion, loss of consciousness, coma, seizures, weakness diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, shortness of breath, coughing, arrhythmias and increased heart rate.

The diet mentality

People believe that weight loss on the scale is the ultimate goal. The truth is weight fluctuates +/- 5 pounds all day everyday. When you look in the magazines what do you see. You see fit healthy people and the desirable lean “look”. Therefore the ultimate goal from anyone wanting to lose weight is % of body fat lost. The resulting loss of fat gives the body that lean look and it is slow compared to the “fad” diets. Healthy weight loss is slow but it is meant to be slow. Ever had a roast in a slow cooker…Mmm it very tasty from being “slow” roasted. It is not how much we weigh it is how we look at the end of the day that is important to people. The act of dieting causes a phenomenon of losing and gaining called the yo-yo diet. The body is actively trying to be in balance, like everything in nature likes to be in nature. The 3 day cardiac diet works by putting the body into an unbalanced state. In this state it would start the yo-yo diet of constantly losing and gaining. In such a way, the body learns to adapt and in response starts to store extra fat. The exact opposite of what we are trying to achieve with dieting. Instead of losing fat we are gaining fat. As soon as the “diet” ends, the body goes back into balance and regains all that is lost and then some more. The body needs to be in balance while losing weight in order for it to be permanent. The sad truth is people want a quick fix, the quicker the diet the better. In order to safely achieve a goal of losing fat you need exercise in an aerobic state for at least 30 minutes a day. Prolonged aerobic exercise (in such a way that increases your heart rate to 60% to 70% of maximum) burns glycogen slowing after 20 minutes of exercise the body’s stores of glycogen run out and the body switches to a slow fat burning simmer. Therefore the longer you exercise after 20 minutes the more fat you burn and it will stay off forever as long as you stay in a balanced state that includes eating a balanced cardiac diet.
