Healthy eating habits that can change you

Healthy eating habits and simple lifestyle changes could have saved my dad. When I was 10 years old my dad died from three successive heart attacks. The doctors had told him that his lifestyle was killing him and he needed to change it before it killed him. Well, he didn't listen. He didn't change to adopt healthy eating habits and it left our family broken and distraught. This was my turning point in my life at a young age I decided I wanted help others so that no one would have to go through this grief and despair.

My father and the tragic events that occurred as a small child were not far from my mind. I remembered my oath to help others in preventing heart attacks or at least surviving heart disease. I didn't know how to do it I was content that nursing in general was making a difference in helping others, I would be right. Along with my desire to help others was a strong desire to provide for my family, so I pursued many different ventures on and off line to achieve that goal.

It became apparent to me that healthy eating habits was key to both disease and health. Everyday we walk a fine line between disease and health. The old adage "we are what we eat" is true in some regards but it's mostly a false assumption. I thought it was true myself, that if you eat too much fat your triglycerides go up, if you eat too much cholesterol your cholesterol goes up and if you eat too much sugar you're at higher risk for developing diabetes. It is true to some point, but how do you explain the healthy eater that has diabetes, some people have a hard time losing fat or that the health conscious person with normal to low cholesterol has just had a heart attack. For a theory to be correct it must explain these outliers. It must explain that for some people who are aware of the health risks associated with some lifestyle choices are still being afflicted with heart disease.

Science explains that for the other outliers the people that don't fit into the theory that genetics plays a part. It must be genetics that explains why the healthy eater gets diabetes, or that some people can't lose fat or the low cholesterol person just had a heart attack. For the most part science has yet to determine the real cause of high blood pressure or why the person eating a low fat diet still is having a hard time losing fat even if their parents were thin as bean poles. Genetics does play a role to some point but again it doesn't explain everybody's situation. Therefore the theory is not true. Pound for pound not everything we eat is the same. How can one ignore the numerous studies that show that eating or drinking high sugary drinks leads to hypertension, obesity and high cholesterol. All risk factors for developing heart disease.

 It has been shown that drinking alcohol and drinking sugary drinks leads to the same thing, inflammation of the liver that in turn leads to obesity. We have all heard the term "beer belly". The liver is an important factor that is missed in association with heart disease. "We are what we eat" is true to some point because the liver has to process everything we eat or drink or breath in. If the liver gets overwhelmed with trying to rid the body of all these toxins, disease sets in. The focus of studies should not be linear, for example, eating high fatty foods leads to high triglycerides. The focus should be on healthy eating habits and heal the liver. A healthy liver leads to a healthy life. My theory is the liver while trying to process our polluted air, the herbicides we indirectly ingest, the refined sugar we eat and the alcohol we drink over taxes the liver to the point that it becomes inflamed. From this inflammation leads to endothelial dysfunction at the same time producing high triglycerides and high cholesterol and high blood pressure.

 The endothelial dysfunction leads to artery and vein dysfunction and with the building blocks of disease in place leads to heart disease, strokes and diabetes. It becomes a volume issue for the liver that if we simply cut out refined sugars and alcohol and put in place liver detoxifying foods. We can heal ourselves from disease and live a long happy healthy life. Adopt healthy eating habits and open your eyes, your mind and heart.
