Know your heart disease risk factors! Why do I need to know my risk factors? Well it’s kinda like walking a railway line and it helps to know when you’re on the tracks when the train is coming, you have to know enough to get out of the way! So know your heart disease risk factors you will be armed with knowledge when to avoid cardiac disease. My long career has brought me face to face with a lot of heart diseases and I watched as people make wrong decisions. Some people never learn how to get out of way of the train that they know is coming.

Your heart requires maintenance, like a car. If you run your car for years without changing the oil; what is the risk your car engine will seize? The same is true for your heart. Certain conditions make one person more at risk for diseases of the heart than others. If you don’t consider what your heart disease risk factors are, then your heart could seize, like the example of the car. Scientists for years have studied the heart and have come up with certain heart disease risk factors that put a person at greater risk of developing heart disease. It doesn’t mean you do all the negative things and you will have a heart attack. It does however put you at a greater risk than someone that does everything right.
Consider smoking the leading cause of death… still! Smoking doesn’t leave anyone with any sense of control. All it does is take… take your breath away takes your power away. The person that is addicted to smoking is controlled by smoking. The person that thinks that they control it is just deluding themselves. I have done it for years and now I have finally stop smoking for good!
Obesity is an epidemic that is on the rise and is starting to challenge smoking as the leading preventable cause of death. As schools choose not to teach healthy eating habits children have no way to learn how to eat right especially if the parents are barely able to make ends meet. People then choose convenience over nutrition. It doesn’t matter how pretty the packaging is fast food still is unhealthy. Instead choose the natural fast food … fruit!
People often overlook the importance the metabolic syndrome or syndrome X or insulin resistance syndrome plays as a risk factor for heart disease, stroke and diabetes. As doctors study this syndrome in more detail they might conclude the syndrome has merit. As it stands today it is a good predictor of heart disease risk and the development of diabetes, but not as a disease process on its own.

No one has a crystal ball no one will tell you that you definitely will have heart disease in 10 years, but they will tell you that if you don’t change your lifestyle now you are at risk of developing heart disease
This is where we can change that just by changing just some of your heart disease risk factors. Risk factors like high blood pressure , high cholesterol and obstructive sleep apnea . There are factors that you can change and ones you cannot. The factor you cannot change is family history. If someone that is blood related has had heart disease there is a 10% chance you might get it too, even though you may do everything right. That is not your fault and you cannot change it.
By changing these risk factors you reduce your chance of disease considerably and the longer you keep them changed year after year the risk drops more and more. So it is more than just changing the risks it is a lifestyle change, something that will change you and your family.
